Charles V Wall

Built in 1552 by the Italian Engineer Calvi. Calvi was sent by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (Charles I King of Spain) to fortify the Gibraltar defences after the attack of September 1540 by Turkish pirates under the command of Barbossa. His son Felipe II later commissioned another Italian engineer El Fratino to extend the wall to the Summit.
