This building on the far side of the Piazza houses Government and the Mayor's official offices. It was formally opened as a city hall on 28th November 1924 by Governor Sir Charles Monro. The building is thought to be on the site of an old hermitage and hospital known as our "Lady of Mercy". A hotel known as the "Club House" was later erected on the site, and then it became a private residence. At one time H. R. H. Duke of Connaught lived there, giving the building the name "Connaught House" until 1924.
