Forbes Quarry Cave

In 1848 the first relic of early man was found in Gibraltar in Forbes Quarry Cave, but the importance of the skull was not realised at the time. In 1856 another skull was found in the Neanderthal valley in Germany. In view of its unique structure, it was attributed to a new type of man -Neanderthal Man. It was then realised that the Gibraltar skull belonged to the same species.
