A monument to General Elliot who commanded during the Great Siege (1779-1783) overlooks Grand Parade. The car-park, which originally formed part of a much larger Alameda Gardens, was called the Alameda Parade, and it was from here that the Regiments which took part in the Great Sortie assembled in the dark before marching out through the gates at Casemates to assault the Spanish Lines.
