Two hundred years ago there were several so-called "towns" on the Rock, of which Irish Town is just one. Others include Portuguese Town at the top of Crutchett's Ramp, Black Town and Spanish Town.

No-one knows why the Irish were associated with this district behind the walls at the north-west corner of the town - not a desirable residential district before there was adequate drainage, as it flooded whenever there was heavy rain, with water sometimes reaching the upper floors of the houses.
