The Loreto nuns first came to Gibraltar from Ireland on the 17th December 1845. Three Loreto nuns and one lay sister first set up a school in the town area. However the Convent was assigned to the Loreto nuns in 1864 and the institution as it is known today was established. In the past, education was of a religious nature - the girls being educated by the Loreto nuns and the boys by the Christian Brothers.

The school was originally called "St Aloysius" - and the name was changed to "Our Lady of Europa" when (in the same year) Bishop Scandella had the image of Our Lady of Europa brought over from Algeciras and installed in a shrine behind the Convent.

The Loreto nuns were granted the freedom of the City of Gibraltar in December 2005.
