Main Street has stood the test of time and seen numerous changes and upheavals, of which the most recent has been the Main Street Beautification Scheme, completed in 1997. This project involved a complete facelift to Gibraltar's Main Street - a total removal of the surface and road split to provide pedestrians with more space. An attractive natural York Stone block, new bins, benches, street lamps with hanging baskets in a classical black and gold cast iron finish, and disability-friendly kerbs retain the tree-lined street's historical character.
