Nun's Well
From GibMap
Nun's Well is a large underground cistern. Water enters the cistern through the porous limestone rocks after having drained south towards the Windmill Hill Flats and then passing through a large geological fault in the cliff face. The origin of the name is not known. One version claims that the cistern was used by the nuns from the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe. This is supported by an old map where it is described as "A bathing place for ye Nuns of Nosta Senora D Europa". Some argue that the cistern is pre-Moorish, others that it dates to Visigothic, Roman or earlier periods. It is also said that it is Moorish and that it once formed part of an extensive "village" at Europa Point.
The plaque at Nun's Well reads: "Under this building and land adjoining it stands a large arched vault or cistern over 80 feet long, supported by pillars of fourteenth century Moorish construction, known as Nun's Well".
