General Sikorski was a wartime Polish Prime Minister and Commander in Chief of the Polish Forces in exile. Sikorski lost his life when the Liberator aircraft in which he was flying crashed into the sea off the East side of the Rock, after taking off from North Front on 4th July 1943. His daughter also died in the crash, but her body was never recovered from the sea. The pilot, First Lietenant Pichal, was the sole survivor of the crash. The propeller of a WWII aircraft has been conserved as a tribute to General Sikorski's memory.
