To understand Gibraltar's history with the United Kingdom and Spain, you need to first start with reading the Treaty of Utrecht.

The brief summary is that Gibraltar was conquered by Britain during the War of Spanish Succession in 1704. Spain ceded Gibraltar under the Treaty of Utrecht in Article Xto the British Crown.

The Treaty stated that the town and castle of Gibraltar, together with the port, fortifications, and forts thereunto belonging was ceded. The Gibraltar territory, which is 800m that connects the Spanish Mainland and The Rock. So the Spanish position is that there's no acknowledgement of British soverignty past the original perimeter, whereas the British position is that posession of the territory should be based on continuous posession.
