Wellington Front was built by convict labour in 1840. At the time there were over 900 convicts working on the reconstruction of the walls and other defences. Off the Front was the anchorage of the "Owen Glendower", a convict ship renamed after a Welsh Prince, and was the base of the convict establishment. The ship's bell used to ring whenever a convict escaped, and is now in the Gibraltar Museum.

This is the location of many Gibraltar local clubs and societies such as the Gibraltar Photographic Society, The Gibraltar Scouts, Gibraltar Jui Jitsu Club etc...
